ExploreI grew up in Germany and spent a year living in São Paulo, Brazil, as a teenager. Moving between two very different cultures early in life made the world feel bigger, and left me curious about what was beyond the familiar.
It began with Porsches. What started as a fascination with
the machines grew into a passion for understanding how things
work, mechanically, electrically, and in the details that make
something feel beautifully engineered.
Working on them taught me to look closer, take things apart,
understand the problem, and figure out how to make something
work better. That instinct would follow me into everything
that came after.
After years of working with machines, I stepped away and took a
year-long sabbatical to travel around the world. I wanted to slow
down, see how other people lived, and follow curiosity without a
particular destination in mind.
I traveled through places including Namibia and Ethiopia, explored
unfamiliar landscapes and cultures, and learned to scuba dive in
the Red Sea and the Philippines. The year became less about
checking places off a map and more about being open to new
experiences, learning new skills, and becoming comfortable with
the unfamiliar.
I returned with a different perspective, and a stronger desire to
build something meaningful and contribute in a more direct way.
I returned from that year of travel wanting to make a positive
contribution. I founded an innovative refill business in the
Bay Area, creating a practical way for people to reduce waste
and make more sustainable everyday choices.
The venture received a Cool California Award from the State of
California and was featured on local television and in
San Francisco Magazine.
I dedicated five years and a half years to being present for
my young son, joining a Waldorf-inspired homeschooling group
and making the rhythms of everyday life the center of our days.
There were meals to prepare, cooked and baked at home with
organic, locally grown produce. There were naps, long walks,
time outside, and music filling the house, from classical and
soul to jazz. On road trips, hip-hop and electronic filled
the car.
Together, we explored the Bay Area, from Golden Gate Park and
the Presidio to the forests of Marin and the Pacific coast.
Learning happened everywhere: in the kitchen, on the trail,
around the dinner table, and through the simple curiosity of
a child discovering the world.
I eventually returned to technology, initially working as a web
developer with environmental nonprofits. I had started
developing those skills while building my own sustainable
business, teaching myself to code and honing them in my spare
time. It became a natural way to combine my technical background
with my interest in sustainability.
From there, I found my way into startups and the fast-moving
world of technology, eventually contributing to one of the
world’s leading platforms. In many ways, the work felt familiar:
understand the system, find the problem, build a solution, and
keep learning.
Today, I’m traveling and climbing, following curiosity wherever it leads. Climbing has become a way to see new places, meet people, and find community. Every wall presents a different challenge: a problem to understand, a movement to figure out, and a new way to learn.
From cars to code, fatherhood to climbing, the pattern remains the same: curiosity, creativity, and the drive to figure things out.
